Berkeley Public Health MCAH Leadership Awards

Purpose of Awards

UC Berkeley's Center of Excellence in Maternal, Child and Adolescent Health (MCAH) aims to honor and celebrate Berkeley Public Health alumni for their outstanding dedication, remarkable achievements, and demonstrated leadership in improving the health of maternal, child, adolescent, and family health.

The MCAH Leadership Awards are presented annually at the UC Berkeley MCAH Alumni Community Building & Networking Event. This year's event is taking place on Sun. November 17 from 11 AM-2 PM at SWAY in West Berkeley - learn more and register. If selected as an Award winner, nominees and one guest of their choice will be provided a free ticket to attend!

Award Categories and Eligibility

Lifetime Achievement in MCAH Award

Note: This award category is not being considered in 2024. Dr. Claire Brindis was selected in 2023, but will be presented with the award this year in 2024.

The Lifetime Achievement in MCAH Award is presented to an individual who has dedicated their life to the field of maternal, child, adolescent, and family health. This Award recipient has made significant contributions to the field of MCAH through demonstrated leadership and service.

  • Eligible nominees must:
    • have been a part of the MCAH field for a minimum of 25 years.
    • have received their BA, MPH, DrPH, and/or PhD from UC Berkeley's School of Public Health.
  • No more than one Lifetime Achievement in MCAH Award will be given each year.

Excellence in MCAH Leadership Award

The Excellence in MCAH Leadership Award recognizes an individual who has made a significant contribution to improving the health of women, children, adolescents and families through their leadership and service to the field of MCAH. Award recipients will have demonstrated excellence in their leadership and serve as a model to other MCAH professionals.

  • Eligible nominees must:
    • have been a part of the MCAH field for a minimum of 10 years.
    • have received their BA, MPH, DrPH, and/or PhD from UC Berkeley's School of Public Health.
  • Up to three Excellence in MCAH Leadership Awards will be given each year.

MCAH Early Career Award

The MCAH Early Career Award recognizes an early-career, outstanding professional in the field of MCAH. Award recipients will have demonstrated excellence in their leadership and serve as a model to other early-career MCAH professionals.

  • Eligible nominees must:
    • have been a part of the MCAH field for no more than 10 years.
    • be professionally active and/or in a doctoral program.
    • have received their BA, MPH, DrPH, and/or PhD from UC Berkeley's School of Public Health.
  • Up to two MCAH Early Career Awards will be given each year.

Nomination Requirements & Process

The nomination process includes completing the nomination form and providing two letters of support (note: letters of support must be different than the nominator).

The nomination form is the primary means of evaluating and rating nominees. The letters of support provide additional justification and explanation for selecting award recipients beyond the nomination form. 

Nominators, please address the following in your submission (500 words max):

  1. Justification for selected award category
  2. Significant contributions in the field of MCAH
  3. Achievements/qualities that can provide inspiration to current students, professionals, and future MCAH leaders

Important Submission Notes

  • The Awards Selection Committee has a strong interest in recognizing the work of people who identify as women, BIPOC, LGBTQ+, and/or other marginalized identities.
  • Self-nominations are accepted.
  • Nominees must be alive at the time of nomination.
  • A person/organization cannot nominate the same individual for more than one award category, but the Awards Selection Committee reserves the right to select the final award category.
  • The Awards Selection Committee also reserves the right not to give an award in any category if a candidate of sufficient merit is not nominated.
  • Prior award recipients may not receive an award again in the same category but may be nominated for another award category based on new merit.
  • Members of the Awards Selection Committee cannot be nominated for an award.
