This previous summer, I had the opportunity of a lifetime to participate in the Summer Public Health Scholar Program at Columbia Mailman School of Public Health. As part of the larger CDC John R. Lewis Undergraduate Public Health Scholars Program, this program aims to increase the diversity of the public health workforce and provide immersive and comprehensive experiences to those entering their journey in public health. As part of the program, we were assigned to different field placements in New York City.

This past summer I interned with GESMujer, a cooperative women’s organization in Oaxaca, México, as part of UC Global Health Institute’s Center for Gender and Health Justice. GESMujer is composed of twelve different communities across Oaxaca each with two promotoras representing every region in Oaxaca. GESMujer allows for the representation of all Indigenous, Mestizo, and Afro-Latine women and girls that are scattered across the country and gives them the opportunity to share the unique challenges they face in their regions.
The 2nd annual EmpowerMED symposium took place in Berkeley Way West this past November. EmpowerMED is designed to expose pre-health students to the various health professional fields they can enter within the medical and public health fields. During the symposium, undergraduate students have the opportunity to connect with a diverse panel of local health professionals and ask questions about their career journey to gain insight into what future they would like to envision for themselves.

The Association of Maternal & Child Health Programs (AMCHP) Annual Conference(link is external) is one of the country’s largest maternal and child health (MCH) professional gatherings. AMCHP 2024 - Partnering with Purpose was held from April 13 to April 16 at the Oakland Marriott City Center with over 1,300 attendees.
I was honored to be selected to present my research at the 2024 Association of Maternal, Child, and Adolescent Health Program Annual Conference, which was held in Oakland, CA. The 5-day conference experience was enriching and reiterated my commitment to maternal and infant health. Through workshops, speaker panels, group lunches, and dancing to AfroBeats with all of the conference attendees, I made long-standing connections with other attendees, while learning so much from those around me.
