Cheri A. Pies is a Clinical Professor Emerita at the School of Public Health, at the University of California, Berkeley. Cheri A. Pies also served as the principal investigator of the Best Babies Zone Initiative, a place-based multi-sector approach to reducing infant mortality through community-driven transformation.

Recently I had the pleasure of attending the Association of Maternal and Child Health Programs (AMCHP)’s annual conference in the vibrant city of New Orleans, Louisiana. This event brought together a diverse group of over 1,300 Maternal and Child Health professionals, experts and advocates from around the country- all united in their dedication to improving the health and well-being of pregnant people, children and adolescents.

The collaborative event with UC Berkeley’s Center of Excellence in Maternal, Child and Adolescent Health (COE in MCAH) and University of Washington’s (UW) Epidemiology - Maternal and Child Health program(link is external) was a thought-provoking day offering deep insights into my journey towards becoming a future MCAH public health practitioner and researcher.

What motivated/inspired you to pursue becoming an OB/GYN?  I decided to become a physician no later than age 8.

The 2023 Minorities in Health Conference was held on the 16th of April this year. Since 2009, this annual student-led event holds the primary purpose of educating students about health disparities that impact our communities and finding ways to decrease these disparities by encouraging and inspiring primarily high school and undergraduate students to strive toward higher education and, ultimately, careers in health. Organized by the Minorities in Health (MIH) Planning Committee, this was the first fully in-person conference since 2019.

Soniya Manju is a first-year MPH student at UC Berkeley in the Maternal, Child, and Adolescent Health (MCAH) Program. She completed her undergraduate degree in Public Health at UC Irvine with a minor in Medical Anthropology. With a passion for reducing health disparities among communities of color, Soniya is exploring her many interests within the MCAH field, including childhood development, child mental health, maternal mortality, and reproductive health.
