The 2nd annual EmpowerMED symposium took place in Berkeley Way West this past November. EmpowerMED is designed to expose pre-health students to the various health professional fields they can enter within the medical and public health fields. During the symposium, undergraduate students have the opportunity to connect with a diverse panel of local health professionals and ask questions about their career journey to gain insight into what future they would like to envision for themselves.

This past summer I interned with GESMujer, a cooperative women’s organization in Oaxaca, México, as part of UC Global Health Institute’s Center for Gender and Health Justice. GESMujer is composed of twelve different communities across Oaxaca each with two promotoras representing every region in Oaxaca. GESMujer allows for the representation of all Indigenous, Mestizo, and Afro-Latine women and girls that are scattered across the country and gives them the opportunity to share the unique challenges they face in their regions.

This previous summer, I had the opportunity of a lifetime to participate in the Summer Public Health Scholar Program at Columbia Mailman School of Public Health. As part of the larger CDC John R. Lewis Undergraduate Public Health Scholars Program, this program aims to increase the diversity of the public health workforce and provide immersive and comprehensive experiences to those entering their journey in public health. As part of the program, we were assigned to different field placements in New York City.

As an MCAH LEAP Scholar, I had the privilege of participating in the National MCH Workforce Development Center's Title V Summer 2024 Internship Program, where I was placed with the Kansas Department of Health and Environment's (KDHE) Bureau of Family Health. This opportunity allowed me to spearhead KDHE’s Title V Fatherhood/Non-Birthing Partner Needs Assessment and address a critical gap in maternal and child health: the exclusion of fathers and gender-expansive non-birthing partners from MCH state action plans and entities that provide guidance for MCH priority areas.

This past fall semester, I have been partaking in a community public health study abroad program in Gaborone, Botswana. Through the program, I visited local clinics and health posts once a week to observe the functioning of health systems in Botswana, and I enrolled in coursework at the University of Botswana studying public health topics in the context of Botswana and Sub-Saharan Africa (SSA).

In my final year at UC Berkeley, I embarked on a personal mission to enhance my professional development. This mission led me to attend three conferences this Fall semester: the Stanford Regen Med Conference, UC Davis Pre-Health Conference, and the SACNAS NDiSTEM Conference.
